Study, Pray, Serve: 2nd Sunday of the Year

Here are some of the main themes in the readings for the 2nd Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Isaiah 62:1-5

  • Jerusalem will no longer be forsaken, but vindicated and recognized by all the nations.
  • The Lord will claim Jerusalem for his own and with great rejoicing.

Psalm – 96:1-3,7-10

  • “Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations.”
  • Glory and praise is given to God with singing, rejoicing and worship.

2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 12:4-11

  • There are a variety of gifts, service and work…but there is one God whose Spirit directs all.
  • Paul then lists a number of spiritual gifts, recalling how each person has something unique to offer.

Gospel John 2:1-11

  • At a wedding in Cana in Galilee, Jesus performs a miracle by turning water into wine.
  • This wine (done at the request of his mother, Mary) is superior to the wine that was served before.

Study, Pray, Serve: 30th Sunday of the Year

Let’s review some of the themes we find in the readings for the 30th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Jeremiah 31:7-9

  • God’s power is revealed as the Lord delivers, gathers, consoles and leads the people.
  • The people respond with joy, praise, exultation and hope.

Psalm – 126:1-6

  • “The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.”
  • This psalm connects directly with the 1st reading as our human response to God’s goodness.

2nd Reading – Hebrews 5:1-6

  • Christ was chosen by the Father to offer his life for us.
  • Christ, because he understands our human weaknesses, deals with us patiently.

Gospel – Mark 10:46-52

  • The blind man, Bartimaeus, calls out to Jesus and asks for help so he can see.
  • Jesus acknowledges his faith and immediately heals him.
  • Bartimaeus then follows Jesus on the way.

St. Paul offers us good news and bad news. The good news? The Gospel is open to all. The bad news we hear today applies to those who knew nothing of God’s saving work, but also didn’t exert any effort to use their minds to see the light of truth.
