As Jesus calls Andrew to follow after him, we are reminded that the Lord’s call echoes in every generation…inviting us to draw near to Christ as we invite others to join us along the way.
The centurion in the Gospel of Matthew reveals his trust in the healing power of Jesus Christ. Familiar with the role of authority, this soldier places himself under the command of Jesus…giving us a powerful example of how we offer our lives in the service of the Lord.
Here’s a quick look at the themes for the readings for the 2nd Sunday of Advent.
1st Reading – Baruch 5:1-9
The prophet encourages the people to take off the robe of mourning and misery and put on the splendor of glory from God.
God has commanded; he is leading the people in joy and bringing them back in glory.
Psalm 126:1-6
“The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.”
The people who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.
2nd Reading – Philippians 1:4-6,8-11
Paul confidently prays with joy for the people that they will continue their good work until the day of Christ Jesus.
This good work includes love, knowledge, discernment, purity and the fruit of righteousness.
Gospel – Luke 3:1-6
Luke sets the context of John the Baptist with the names of history, such as Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate and the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas.
John’s ministry is understood in light of the words of Isaiah…prepare the way of the Lord!
The exhortation in the First Letter of St. Paul to the Thessalonians inspires us to cultivate hearts that are full of God’s love. What a great way to enter into the season of Advent!
When the going gets tough, the tough get praying! Our help is in the Lord, and we are invited to be vigilant in our prayer as we face the challenges before us.
The spiritual life is not easy, and the Gospel of Luke today makes it clear that perseverance is a crucial component in the life of faith. Hang in there!
Jesus comments on the humble yet extravagant offering of the poor widow. She gives all that she has…and inspires us to consider how we will offer our lives for the Lord today.
