Study, Pray, Serve: 6th Sunday of Easter

Let’s examine some of the main themes in the Mass readings for the 6th Sunday of Easter.

1st Reading – Acts of the Apostles 10:25-26,34-35,44-48

  • Peter encounters Cornelius, discovering that the Holy Spirit of God comes to all people who fear the Lord and act uprightly.
  • As a result, Gentiles are now able to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

Psalm – 98:1-4

  • “The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.”
  • Singing joyfully to the Lord, we proclaim God’s victory, justice, kindness and wondrous deeds to all the nations.

2nd Reading – 1st Letter of John 4:7-10

  • We love one another because God first loved us, for God is love.
  • Out of love, God sent his son as expiation for our sins.

Gospel – John 15:9-17

  • Jesus commands his disciples to love one another as he loves us.
  • The Lord chooses us and appoints us to go and bear fruit that will remain as we carry out his command to love one another.
