Jesus calls, empowers and sends the Twelve Apostles to carry out his ministry. We, too, have been chosen by the Lord to offer our lives for service in the world.
The call of Andrew, along with Peter, James and John reveals God’s initiative in our lives. As St. Paul reminds us, we are all called and sent by the Lord so that others may hear the Good News.

As Jesus calls Andrew to follow after him, we are reminded that the Lord’s call echoes in every generation…inviting us to draw near to Christ as we invite others to join us along the way.
The readings today reveal how God chooses and empowers us so that we might offer our lives for service in the world. Everyday the Lord invites…how will we respond?
The Letter to the Ephesians beautifully illustrates how we are directed to live according to the manner of our call to follow Jesus Christ. Simply put, if we have been given gifts, then may we joyfully offer them to the Lord!
Both the Letter to the Ephesians and the Gospel of Matthew offer insights into how the Lord calls us (with all our imperfections) in various ways, giving us the grace we need for the work entrusted to our care.
We have been chosen by God to offer our lives for service in the world. Our actions will be unique to our own particular qualities, gifts, talents and opportunities…but when we do so the Lord will take our offering and bless it with power.
As Jesus calls and empowers the Twelve to be Apostles, we see how the Lord continues to work in our lives…calling us to follow and then sending us into the world to proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom of Heaven.
