1st Reading – Exodus 19:2-6a
- The people of Israel are encamped in the desert of Sinai before the mountain of God.
- Speaking to Moses, the Lord reminds the people of their redemption from Egypt and to keep God’s covenant as his special possession.
Psalm – 100:1-3,5
- “We are his people: the sheep of his flock.”
- The Lord’s goodness endures forever, and we come before God with joyful song.
2nd Reading – Romans 5:6-11
- God proves his love for us, for while we were still sinners Christ died for us.
- Through the death of Jesus we are now reconciled to God.
Gospel – Matthew 9:36-10:8
- Seeing the crowds, Jesus takes pity on the people, who are like sheep without a shepherd.
- Christ appoints the Twelve by name, giving them authority to drive out unclean spirits and cure every disease and illness.
- The Lord then sends out the Twelve to make the proclamation, “The kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
