We are reminded that our faith is built upon the foundation provided by the Apostles who were called by name by Jesus. As we hear the call of Christ in our lives today, we contribute to their efforts as we proclaim the Good News in the world.
The world can be a dangerous place where we encounter struggles that test us to the limit. Today we are reminded that we are not alone; in the order of creation God’s angels are among us, and some of them are appointed to help us in times of need. Among them the archangels are God’s “heavy hitters” who remind us to call for help when times are tough.
The Church celebrates the birth of Mary out of gratitude for her cooperation with God’s plan of salvation through Jesus Christ. As we remember the Mother of God today, may we continue to open our hearts – cooperating with God’s plan for our lives as the Lord’s disciples.
John the Baptist precedes Jesus in his birth, preaching and death. John’s witness to the Lord and the giving of his life inspire us to consider how we offer our lives each day to Christ…until the day when the Lord takes us by the hand at the hour of our own death.
Philip brings Nathaniel (also known as Bartholomew) to Christ, changing his life forever. It reminds us that sometimes we have the opportunity to lead others to the Lord, and sometimes we need to open our hearts to what Jesus has to say.
Mary’s assumption into Heaven reveals her crucial role in the Church. As the Mother of God her “fiat” to the Angel Gabriel proclaims the greatness of the Lord, and her fidelity to God’s will as she stood at the Cross offers us a profound example as we strive to live our faith in the midst of difficulty.
These two great saints made an enormous impact in the Church, even as they encountered hard work and confronted their own weaknesses and sins. May we look to their example and trust in the Lord for the grace we need to face the challenges of life.
As the herald of Jesus, John directs people to prepare for the coming of the messiah. His birth, words and actions all point others to the Lord…and inspire us to do the same as modern days disciples.
The feast of the Sacred Heart of the Jesus celebrates the love of God for the whole world. Without limit or boundary, the Lord’s love for us is unconditional and offers us the opportunity to both receive and share this love with one another.
