Here are some of the key themes that surface in the readings for the 3rd Sunday of Easter.
1st Reading – Acts 5:27-32,40b-41
- The Apostles stand before the Sanhedrin, stating that they must obey God rather than men.
- The Apostles rejoice that they were found worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name of Jesus.
Psalm – 30:2,4-6,11-13
- “I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.”
- God offers help in times of testing and trial.
2nd Reading – Revelation 5:11-14
- John sees the heavenly host of angels praising the Lamb of God.
- All present cry out, “Amen!” and worship the Lord.
Gospel – John 21:1-19
- A group of disciples recognize the Risen Lord while fishing.
- Peter responds three times to Jesus’ question, “Do you love me?”

Here are some of the themes in the readings for the 2nd Sunday of Easter.
1st Reading – Acts of the Apostles 5:12-16
- The apostles continue the healing ministry of the Lord by performing many signs and wonders.
- Many people are cured of their illnesses, and the number of believers continues to increase.
Psalm – 118:2-4,13-15,22-24
- “Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting.”
- God performs great deeds, even in the midst of human suffering and tribulation.
2nd Reading – Revelation 1:9-11a,12-13,17-19
- John is caught up in a prophetic vision where he sees the Son of Man.
- He is told not to be afraid, for death has been overcome.
Gospel – John 20:19-31
- “Doubting Thomas” does not believe that the disciples have seen the Risen Lord.
- Once Thomas does see, Jesus gives praise to those who have not seen, but still believe.

Let’s examine some of the main themes in the readings for Easter Day.
1st Reading – Acts of the Apostles 10:34a,37-43
- Peter proclaims the life, death and resurrection of Jesus to the crowd.
- The disciples are witnesses of Christ and testify on his behalf for the forgiveness of sins.
Psalm 118: 1-2,16-17,22-23
- “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad.”
- We give thanks for the might and glory of God who is merciful to us.
2nd Reading – Colossians 3:1-4
- You have died with Christ, and your life is hidden with God.
- When Christ your life appears, you will appear with him in glory.
2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 5:6b-8
- We clear out the old yeast of malice and wickedness.
- We make a new batch of dough with the new yeast of sincerity and truth.
Gospel – John 20:1-9
- Mary Magdalen finds the tomb empty and runs to tell Peter and the other disciple.
- Peter and the other disciple run back to the tomb.
- They had not yet understood that Jesus had to rise from the dead.
