Here are some of the central themes in the readings for the 33rd Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Daniel 12:1-3

  • Michael the great prince and guardian of the people shall arise.
  • During this time of upheaval there will be an accounting for the good and the bad.

Psalm – 16:5,8-11

  • “You are my inheritance, O Lord!”
  • We rejoice in the Lord who does not abandon us, but shows us the path to life.

2nd Reading – Hebrews 10:11-14,18

  • Jesus Christ offers one sacrifice for sins and takes his place at the right hand of God.
  • Compared with the sacrifice of the Levitical priests, Christ’s perfect offering makes possible our forgiveness.

Gospel – Mark 13:24-32

  • Jesus teaches about the end times where there will be tribulation and judgment.
  • The Lord uses the example of a fig tree to teach the disciples how to read the sign of the times.

At the conclusion of his Letter to the Romans, St. Paul starts dropping names as he greets and cites many holy people who are all serving the Lord. Would that our names were among them! Today we remember all our beloved dead and we entrust them to the tender care of Christ’s divine mercy. Living and deceased, we are all held in the hands of God, and we pray for the repose of the souls of those who have passed from this life…that they will be united in love with the Lord in Heaven.

Study, Pray, Serve: 32nd Sunday of the Year

Here are some of the central themes in the readings for the 32nd Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Kings: 17:10-16

  • Elijah asks for food from a widow and tells here not to be afraid; God will provide.
  • The woman gives all that she has…and she has all that she needs for a year!

Psalm – 146:7-10

  • “Praise the Lord, my soul!”
  • The Lord protects those who are…hungry, captives, blind, bowed down, strangers, and widows.

2nd Reading – Hebrews 9:24-28

  • The priesthood of Jesus Christ is compared and contrasted with the Levitical priesthood.
  • Christ, as God on our behalf, offers a sacrifice that takes away our sins.

Gospel – Mark 12:38-44

  • Jesus offers a warning on false teachers, then he contrasts the example of a poor widow.
  • The widow gives all that she has, and in the sight of Heaven it is a greater gift than the surplus wealth of others.
