My first telescope that I purchased as a boy which revealed to me the rings of Saturn.

Guided by the light of the star, the Magi followed the marvels of the natural world to the supernatural glory of God revealed in the Christ child.

Here are some of the themes that we discover in the Mass readings for the Epiphany of the Lord.

1st Reading – Isaiah 60:1-6

  • The Lord shines over Jerusalem, as people draw near the glory of God.
  • Praising God, people bring gifts and treasures into the city.

Psalm – 72:1-2,7-8,10-13

  • “Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.”
  • God bestows blessings on the king and the people who cry out for help.

2nd Reading – Ephesians 3:2-3a,5-6

  • God has revealed the mystery of salvation to the present age.
  • Through the Holy Spirit, the apostles and prophets proclaim that the Gentiles are coheirs in Jesus Christ.

Gospel – Matthew 2:1-12

  • The magi arrive in Jerusalem from the east, seeking the newborn king of the Jews.
  • Herod learns that the child will be born in Bethlehem and tells the magi to return and tell him the location.
  • The magi follow the star, which brings them to the infant Jesus, and they offer their kingly gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Here are some of the themes that emerge from the Mass readings for the 3rd Sunday of Advent.

1st Reading – Isaiah 61:1-2a,10-11

  • The Spirit of the Lord comes upon Isaiah to preach glad tidings of hope and liberty.
  • God is the source of all blessings that bring joy, justice, and praise.

Psalm – Luke 1:46-50,53-54

  • “My soul rejoices in my God.”
  • This “psalm” is actually taken from Mary’s Magnificat in Luke’s Gospel, proclaiming God’s goodness and mercy.

2nd Reading – 1st Thessalonians 5:16-24

  • Rejoice, pray, and give thanks without ceasing, testing everything and retaining what is good.
  • With God’s peace we grow in holiness, as we live blameless lives for the Lord.

Gospel – John 1:6-8,19-20

  • John the Baptist testifies that he is not Elijah, the prophet, or the Christ.
  • Rather, John comes to testify to the light – Jesus Christ – who is yet to come.

4th Sunday of Lent: Christ cures the blindness of our hearts. Catholic Inspiration

The healing encounter between Jesus and the blind man brings about the gift of sight, followed later by the gift of faith. We, too, in the darkness of our ignorance and sin, call upon the Lord to foster spiritual sight within our hearts to help us journey through this life to the next.

Study, Pray, Serve: 4th Sunday of Lent

Here are some of the themes in the Mass readings for the 4th Sunday of Lent.

1st Reading – 1st Samuel 16:1b,6-7,10-13a

  • The Lord sends Samuel to Jesse in Bethlehem to anoint one of his sons as the new king.
  • The Lord then tells Samuel that, “Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the Lord looks into the heart.”
  • Samuel will eventually anoint the youngest of Jesse’s sons, David.

Psalm – 23:1-6

  • “The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.”
  • The Lord guides through the dark valley and protects us, anointing us with oil and blessing us.

2nd Reading – Ephesians 5:8-14

  • Once we were in darkness, but now we live as children in the light of the Lord.
  • We expose whatever is shameful to the light of Christ.

Gospel – John 9:1-41

  • Jesus encounters a blind man and heals him on the sabbath.
  • Christ proclaims that he is the light of the world, healing both body and soul.
  • Cured of his blindness, the man comes to believe in Jesus.
