
Here are some of the themes that we discover in the Mass readings for the Epiphany of the Lord.
1st Reading – Isaiah 60:1-6
- The Lord shines over Jerusalem, as people draw near the glory of God.
- Praising God, people bring gifts and treasures into the city.
Psalm – 72:1-2,7-8,10-13
- “Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.”
- God bestows blessings on the king and the people who cry out for help.
2nd Reading – Ephesians 3:2-3a,5-6
- God has revealed the mystery of salvation to the present age.
- Through the Holy Spirit, the apostles and prophets proclaim that the Gentiles are coheirs in Jesus Christ.
Gospel – Matthew 2:1-12
- The magi arrive in Jerusalem from the east, seeking the newborn king of the Jews.
- Herod learns that the child will be born in Bethlehem and tells the magi to return and tell him the location.
- The magi follow the star, which brings them to the infant Jesus, and they offer their kingly gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
