Monday Conversation: Start the New Year with a gentle way to share your faith!

Are you looking for New Year’s Resolution to grow in your faith? This presentation was given by Fr. Andrew on August 22, 2023 to the leadership of his cluster of parishes regarding how a person (and a parish) share their faith with others in an open and non-threatening way. Using Acts 8:26-40, we discern a four point outline:

  1. Work on our own spiritual life with the Lord.
  2. Deepen and foster our personal relationships with others.
  3. Be ready to give witness when people have “opened the door.”
  4. Show them the next step.
  5. Fr. Andrew then offers some ways this process affects parish life.

People are always watching. If they see our consistent, faithful witness AND we are sincerely present in a loving and honest way, there often comes a time when people will comment about our faith. It is at that moment that we can respond, showing how our faith helps us face the challenges of life, and offering an invitation for them to take a step that leads to knowing more about God.

Study, Pray, Serve: The Epiphany of the Lord

Photo by Sindre Fs on Pexels.com

Here are some of the themes that we discover in the Mass readings for the Epiphany of the Lord.

1st Reading – Isaiah 60:1-6

  • The Lord shines over Jerusalem, as people draw near the glory of God.
  • Praising God, people bring gifts and treasures into the city.

Psalm – 72:1-2,7-8,10-13

  • “Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.”
  • God bestows blessings on the king and the people who cry out for help.

2nd Reading – Ephesians 3:2-3a,5-6

  • God has revealed the mystery of salvation to the present age.
  • Through the Holy Spirit, the apostles and prophets proclaim that the Gentiles are coheirs in Jesus Christ.

Gospel – Matthew 2:1-12

  • The magi arrive in Jerusalem from the east, seeking the newborn king of the Jews.
  • Herod learns that the child will be born in Bethlehem and tells the magi to return and tell him the location.
  • The magi follow the star, which brings them to the infant Jesus, and they offer their kingly gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph knew blessings and burdens as they faced the ups and downs of life. Their example inspires us to engage our faith as we live within the context of our families today.
