Here are some of the themes that we discover in the Mass readings for the Epiphany of the Lord.
1st Reading – Isaiah 60:1-6
The Lord shines over Jerusalem, as people draw near the glory of God.
Praising God, people bring gifts and treasures into the city.
Psalm – 72:1-2,7-8,10-13
“Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.”
God bestows blessings on the king and the people who cry out for help.
2nd Reading – Ephesians 3:2-3a,5-6
God has revealed the mystery of salvation to the present age.
Through the Holy Spirit, the apostles and prophets proclaim that the Gentiles are coheirs in Jesus Christ.
Gospel – Matthew 2:1-12
The magi arrive in Jerusalem from the east, seeking the newborn king of the Jews.
Herod learns that the child will be born in Bethlehem and tells the magi to return and tell him the location.
The magi follow the star, which brings them to the infant Jesus, and they offer their kingly gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
