On this feast of St. Lawrence, deacon and martyr, we recognize the Paschal Mystery of Jesus as the model for our generous and cheerful sacrifices that we offer to God.
Seeing the example of a poor widow, Jesus teaches us that in the eyes of Heaven the value of our offering is not counted in the amount, but rather in the amount of sacrifice.
Peter’s statement and the Lord’s response inspire us to make a daily offering for God. While sacrifice is often challenging, Christ strengthens and guides us with help from heaven.
On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus speaks of his suffering, death, and resurrection. As we follow the Lord today, may we consider how we are called to offer our lives through the sacrifices we make.
The Church celebrates the martyrdom of St. Stephen immediately after Christmas, in no small way to remind us that the child we worship in the manger will grow to offer his life for the salvation of the world. May Stephen’s example inspire us today to live our lives for the Lord.
As Jesus observes a poor widow offering a few coins for the temple treasury, he reveals that in the eyes of Heaven what is valued looks a little differently. It’s the sacrifice, not the amount, that makes the angels rejoice.
In the midst of the miracles, healings and teachings, Jesus reminds his disciples that he will be handed over. Knowing the sacrifice that Christ makes on our behalf, may we be renewed to seek the Lord each and every day.
As the Lord speaks with his disciples, he reveals his suffering, death and resurrection. May this sacrifice inspire us to recognize our sins and return to Christ, who reveals God’s love through the Cross.
