Daily Mass: Solomon’s prayer. Catholic Inspiration

Solomon’s prayer over the newly built Temple shows us the power of a place to draw our hearts to God. May these words inspire us – at church or at home – to call upon the Lord in the places where we dwell.

Daily Mass: Reconciling within our families. Catholic Inspiration

The story of Joseph in the Book of Genesis recounts the power of reconciliation within a family.  Joseph chooses the higher path and overcomes hatred and discord as he returns compassion toward his brothers.  His example inspires us to examine our own families and actively seek opportunities to foster peace.

6th Sunday of Easter: God’s Peace in our lives

Study: Recall a time when you experienced a profound sense of peace.  What made this possible?

Pray: Ask for God’s peace to touch your life and the those you love.

Serve: Consider ways you can share the peace of Christ with others.  Be an instrument of peace today.

Mass Readings – 6th Sunday of Easter

I find the words of the Lord in the Gospel tremendously comforting:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.
Not as the world gives do I give it to you.
Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.”  (John 14:27)

How often do we need to hear these words!  How often do we find ourselves disturbed and upset by the frustrations and fears of life?!  And yet, Jesus – who knows us better than we know ourselves – consoles and comforts us with a peace that flows on the wings of the Holy Spirit from the heart of Heaven.

We crave peace: in our hearts, our homes, our work, our community.  There is a tranquility that comes when we are united with one another, free from discord, doubt and misunderstanding.  God’s peace empowers us to walk through the challenges of life with a quiet conviction that we will face whatever comes before us with the guidance of Christ.

Two key thoughts thus emerge:

  1. Where do I need to foster peace in my life?
  2. How can I share God’s peace with others?

Are there parts of my life that hunger for peace?  Bring them to prayer.  Are there ways that I can be an instrument of peace, in my own life and in the lives of others?  Act now.  God’s peace is for the asking and the Holy Spirit is present to renew us with this blessed gift.

May we leave behind our fears and anxieties, turning to Christ for the strength and guidance we need to embrace our lives with joy.

Peace be with you!

John’s Gospel offers a beautiful reflection as Jesus invites us to trust in him when doubt, fear and anxiety overwhelm us.  God is our strength and our comfort, providing us the grace we need as we follow where the Lord leads.

Daily Mass: Find the balance in work and rest. Catholic Inspiration

The Gospel today shows the disciples both at work and at rest with Jesus.  Finding balance in our lives can be challenging, yet when we take the long view we recognize that there are many different elements that enrich God’s gift of life.

School Mass: Peace I leave with you. Catholic Inspiration

One of the best ways to face a test in school is to start with a prayer, asking the Lord for peace in our hearts.  One of the best ways to face a test in life?  Do the same!

2nd Sunday of Easter: United in mind and heart

The unity of the disciples through gratitude, love and peace offers us an example of how we draw together today with the people God puts in our lives.  This is is not easy work…but it is worth it!

2nd Sunday of Easter: One in heart and mind

Study: Where have I experienced profound moments of unity with others?

Pray:  Where do I see signs of disunity in my life?  Call upon the Lord for grace and strength.

Serve:  How can I help others grow closer together?  How can I foster unity?

Mass Readings – 2nd Sunday of Easter

“The community of believers was of one heart and mind…”  (Acts 4:32)

I marvel at the transformation of the disciples.  Before the resurrection of Jesus they were filled with fear, paralyzed by their own weakness and doubt; after the resurrection they are changed, as evidenced in even the basic ways they lived and worked together.

One heart and mind!

Unity can be challenging in even the best circumstances: we see things differently, hold our own unique values and principles, as well as personal tastes and interests.  Working together is tough, yet it is a common sign of holiness – the practical proof that we are doing our part to build the Lord’s kingdom here on earth.

What supports unity?  Jesus Christ!  Unity with Christ provides the grace for unity with Christ’s brothers and sisters; this clear sign of faith draws others to the Good News and fosters our community with one another.  Take a look at a few of the patterns that emerge in today’s readings:

  • 1st Reading – sharing according to need
  • Psalm – giving thanks to the Lord
  • 2nd Reading – love of God by keeping his commandments
  • Gospel – Christ’s peace that overcomes doubt

Another way to say it: Sharing, Gratitude, Love, Peace – which find their source in Jesus and flow through us to the those we meet.  I would suggest that the disciples used these building blocks to form the first elements of the Church, working together in unity with the grace of Christ to proclaim the Good News.

This work continues today.  We all know firsthand the effects of discord – where lives are broken and fragmented by selfishness, fear, hate, and a hardness of heart – yet we believe in something greater…Christ is triumphant!  Our response can mirror the disciples:

  • We acknowledge the obstacles in our lives
  • We turn to Jesus Christ and call upon his grace
  • We allow the Lord to work through us to unite with one another

May we bring these powerful blessings of the resurrection to our world today:

  • Sharing the gifts God has given us
  • Grateful for the blessings we have received from on high
  • Loving others as Christ loves us
  • Bringing the Lord’s peace to those before us

One heart and mind!
