Study, Pray, Serve: 29th Sunday of the Year

Let’s examine some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 29th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Isaiah 53:10-11

  • Here the “suffering servant” faces hardship and affliction.
  • Through this suffering, however, God will bring forth blessings and redemption.

Psalm – 33:4-5,18-20,22

  • “Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you.”
  • We wait for the Lord, who is trustworthy, kind, and just, to deliver us from death.

2nd Reading – Hebrews 4:14-16

  • Jesus is our great high priest who has passed through the heavens.
  • We can confidently approach him, for he was tested like us in every way, yet without sin.

Gospel – Mark 10:35-45

  • James and John approach Jesus, asking for the honor of sitting next to him in his glory.
  • When the Lord asks if they will drink the cup and be baptized in his baptism, they say yes.
  • When the other disciples become indignant, Jesus teaches them that to be great they must follow his example and become the servant of all.

Study, Pray, Serve: 24th Sunday of the Year

Here are some of the main themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 24th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Isaiah 50:5-9a

  • The prophet endures physical abuse from others who reject his message.
  • God gives him strength and help; he is not disgraced and will not give up.

Psalm – 116:1-6,8-9

  • “I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.”
  • In our moments of distress and sorrow, we call upon the Lord who frees us from death.

2nd Reading – James 2:14-18

  • It is not enough to wish people well; we must do our part to care for them.
  • We demonstrate our faith in God by our works of charity for others.

Gospel – Mark 8:27-35

  • When asked by Jesus at Caesarea Philippi about his identity, Peter acknowledges that Jesus is the Christ.
  • After the Lord speaks about his passion and death on the cross, he chastises Peter for thinking “not as God does, but as human beings do.”
