Here some of the key themes that surface in the readings for the 21st Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Joshua 24:1-2a,15-17,18b

  • Joshua calls upon the people to make a choice…who will they serve?
  • The people affirm their faith in God, who led their fathers out of the land of Egypt.

Psalm – 34:2-3,16-21

  • “Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.”
  • God delivers the just person from distress, trouble and trials.

2nd Reading – Ephesians 5:21-32

  • The relationship between husband and wife takes on spiritual dimensions, far beyond the household code of authority.
  • Marriage, with its interdependent relationship of love, reveals the greater mystery of the relationship between Christ and the Church.

Gospel – John 6:60-69

  • Jesus persists in his teaching of the “Bread of Life” discourse, even as the disciples are murmuring.
  • Many disciples separate from Jesus and return to their former way of life.
  • The Twelve remain with Jesus as Peter testifies that the Lord has “the words of eternal life.”

Study, Pray, Serve: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Here are some of the themes from the readings on this feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

1st Reading – Revelation 11:19a, 12:1-6a, 10ab

  • The Church interprets the woman in this passage as Mary.
  • The dragon is the enemy who attempts to destroy the woman and child.
  • The voice of heaven proclaims God’s authority and kingdom have come through the son, born of the woman, who will rule all nations.

Psalm – 45:10-12,16

  • “The queen stands at your right hand, arrayed in gold.”
  • This psalm, when applied to Mary, reveals her majesty among all created things as queen.

2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 15:20-27

  • The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ overturns the first sin of Adam.
  • Christ will reign over all things, finally destroying death forever.

Gospel – Luke 1:39-56

  • The first part of the passage describes the interaction between Mary and Elizabeth as their babies (from within the womb) leap for joy.
  • The second part of the passage offers Mary’s great Magnificat of praise and thanksgiving to God.
