Study, Pray, Serve: 2nd Sunday of Advent

Let’s take a look at some of the themes we find in the readings for the 2nd Sunday of Advent.

1st Reading – Isaiah 11:1-10

  • The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon an ancestor of the line of Jesse, and he shall judge with justice.
  • Creation will experience profound peace with those who were formerly at odds.
  • Even the Gentiles will seek out God.

Psalm – 72: 1-2,7-8,12-13,17

  • “Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace for ever.”
  • The king shall rescue the poor and judge with justice.

2nd Reading – Romans 15:4-9

  • Through Christ, God gives us hope, endurance and encouragement.
  • We welcome one another, as Christ welcomes us.

Gospel – Matthew 3:1-12

  • John the Baptist proclaims, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!”
  • John speaks of one who is coming after him, who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Study, Pray, Serve: 1st Sunday of Advent

Here are some of the themes that surface in the readings for the 1st Sunday of Advent.

1st Reading – Isaiah 2:1-5

  • The mountain of the Lord shall be the highest mountain, and people shall come toward it.
  • On this mountain will be peace among the nations.

Psalm – 122: 1-9

  • “Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.”
  • We rejoice and pray that Jerusalem is a city of peace and prosperity.

2nd Reading – Romans 13:11-14

  • The hour is at hand to awake from sleep; salvation is at hand.
  • We put on the Lord Jesus Christ, throwing off the works of darkness and putting on the armor of light.

Gospel – Matthew 24:37-44

  • Referring to the time of Noah, Jesus urges the people to be ready for the coming of the Son of Man.
  • Christ calls us to be prepared, for at an unexpected hour the Son of Man will come.
