Study, Pray, Serve: 1st Sunday of Advent

Here are some of the themes for the readings for the 1st Sunday of Advent.

1st Reading – Jeremiah 33:14-16

  • The days are coming when the Lord will fulfill the promise to the house of Israel
  • The Lord will bring justice through the shoot of David.

Psalm – 25:4-5,8-9,10,14

  • “To you, O Lord, I lift my soul.”
  • The psalmist invites the people to seek the Lord, who offers kindness and goodness.

2nd Reading – 1st Thessalonians 3:12-4:2

  • Paul blesses the people with an increase in love for one another.
  • He then exhorts the people to conduct themselves in a manner pleasing to God.

Gospel – Luke 21:25-28,34-35

  • Jesus tells his disciples about the end times and encourages them to be vigilant at all times.
  • The Lord further reminds the disciples to pray that they have strength to face their tribulations.

Jesus Christ: Our King who offers his life for his kingdom. Catholic Inspiration

We claim Jesus Christ as King of the Universe, and this title establishes his reign over our hearts. Yet this king does not come to be served; rather he offers his life that all the inhabitants of his kingdom might have the hope of eternal life. Our response? Let us pledge our lives to our King!

Study, Pray, Serve: Christ the King

Let’s take a look at some of the main themes from the readings for the Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the King of the Universe.

1st Reading – Daniel 7:13-14

  • The Son of Man comes before the Ancient One to receive dominion, glory and kingship.
  • His kingship shall not be destroyed, and all peoples, nations and languages serve him.

Psalm – 93:1-2,5

  • “The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty.”
  • The Lord’s splendor and throne is everlasting; his decrees are worthy of trust.

2nd Reading – Revelation 1:5-8

  • Christ, the faithful witness and firstborn of the dead, loves us and has freed us by his blood.
  • The Lord, who is the Alpha and the Omega, comes with God’s might amid the clouds.

Gospel – John 18:33b-37

  • Pilate questions Jesus to see if he is the King of the Jews.
  • Jesus claims his kingship does not belong to this world, but yes! He is a king!

33rd Sunday of the Year: We are vigilant in our faith in Christ. Catholic Inspiration

Jesus reminds us in the Gospel of Mark that there will be consequences for the choices we make in life, and he also makes it clear that we will not know the day nor the hour of judgment. Our response? To be vigilant at all times as we follow the Lord!
