Throughout our lives we have numerous experiences of vigilance: watching over a loved one, remaining attentive to someone’s needs or waiting in expectation for an arrival. The same is true everyday in the spiritual life as we are vigilant in living our faith for Jesus Christ.
The people in the readings were tempted, even as they were striving to follow God. They show us that we need to be vigilant against temptation as we engage our faith in Christ with the support of one another.
Both Paul and Jesus offer words of caution: Be vigilant! There are forces in our world that will try to undermine and erode our faith; we call upon the Lord for the wisdom and strength we need to face trial and difficulty with God’s grace.
