Here are some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 12th Sunday of the Year.
1st Reading – Job 18:1,8-11
From the storm God addresses Job, reminding him that it was the Lord’s might that set the limits and boundaries of all creation.
Psalm – 107:23-26,28-31
“Give thanks to the Lord, his love is everlasting.”
In the midst of the power and might of nature, the people call upon the Lord and give him glory and praise.
2nd Reading – 2nd Corinthians 5:14-17
Impelled by the love of Christ, we no longer live for ourselves but for the one who died and rose for us.
Those who are in Christ are now a new creation, and they no longer live according to the flesh.
Gospel – Mark 4:35-41
Jesus is with the disciples in a boat when a violent storm comes upon them.
Upon awakening, the Lord calms the storm with a word and chastises the disciples for their lack of faith.

As Jesus calms the storm (and the fears of the disciples!) we recognize the Lords power to help us face the storms that surface in our lives. May we call upon Christ for the hope, wisdom and courage we need each and every day.

Here are some of the major themes that surface in the readings on this 12th Sunday of the Year.
1st Reading – Job 38:1,8-11
God speaks to Job in the midst of a storm, revealing that the Almighty is transcendent and above any human criteria of judgment. This passage focuses on the act of creation (as contrasted with Job, who is a mortal creature.)
Psalm 107: 23-26,28-31
“Give thanks to the Lord, his love is everlasting.” This part of the Psalm pertains to those who have been rescued from a storm at sea.
2nd Reading – 2nd Corinthians 5:14-17
Once we understand the love of Jesus on the Cross, we are moved to love one another. Our sincere love for God is a selfless love; we no longer live for ourselves, but for the Lord.
Gospel – Mark 4:35-41
During a storm on the Sea of Galilee, the disciples are terrified and wake up Jesus. The Lord stills the storm and exhorts them to grow in faith.

During the storm on the sea the disciples cry out in fear. Jesus calms the storm and comforts them, reminding us that when fear threatens to overwhelm us we seek the one who gives us strength.
