30th Sunday of the Year – O God, be merciful to me a sinner!

year-of-mercy-logo

Study:  Consider a time when you experienced mercy.  What did it feel like?

Pray:  Are you struggling to be merciful to someone right now?  Ask the Lord for help!

Serve:  Is there an act of mercy you can do for someone in need today?  How can you make it happen?

Mass Readings – 30th Sunday of the Year

The readings this Sunday could have been chosen for the Year of Mercy.  Take a look:

  • 1st Reading – “The Lord is a God of justice, who knows no favorites…”
  • Psalm – “The Lord hears the cry of the poor.”
  • 2nd Reading – “The Lord stood by me and gave me strength.”
  • Gospel – Two men went to the Temple to pray…and the one who said, “O God, be merciful to me a sinner” was heard!

As Pope Francis constantly reminds us, the name of God is Mercy.  Jesus shows us repeated examples of the mercy and love of the Father, inviting us to both receive God’s grace and then live with mercy toward one another.

It’s a simple message, direct and to the point.  Yet we know from our own experience how hard it can be to practice mercy in our world today!  We suffer injury, offense, misunderstanding and hassle in our daily interactions with one another.  People get under our skin.  We get angry.  We lose our focus.

And thus this simple message continues to speak to our hearts, heal our souls, and guide us into the grace that comes when we foster forgiveness and pursue peace.  Mercy is a practical application of the Great Commandment to love one another; mercy becomes our homework for holiness by which we put the example of Jesus into our own daily practice.

God’s mercy washes us clean and heals the wounds caused by sin.  As we seek the Lord’s mercy in our lives, may we allow this gift of mercy to move through us and touch the lives of those we meet.

Daily Mass Readings – Tuesday of the 8th Week of Ordinary Time

The Gospel today reminds that the love of God is the source of all love from which all other loves and graces find their meaning and power.  Do we love Christ above all else?  Do we place God first in our hearts?  May we continue to commit our lives to Jesus – in whose Sacred Heart flows the Love of God!

6th Sunday of Easter – Peace I give to you

mypeace

Study: Recall a time when you experienced a profound sense of peace.  What made this possible?

Pray: Ask for God’s peace to touch your life and the those you love.

Serve: Consider ways you can share the peace of Christ with others.  Be an instrument of peace today.

6th Sunday of Easter Readings

I find the words of the Lord in the Gospel tremendously comforting:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.
Not as the world gives do I give it to you.
Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.”  (John 14:27)

How often do we need to hear these words!  How often do we find ourselves disturbed and upset by the frustrations and fears of life?!  And yet, Jesus – who knows us better than we know ourselves – consoles and comforts us with a peace that flows on the wings of the Holy Spirit from the heart of Heaven.

We crave peace: in our hearts, our homes, our work, our community.  There is a tranquility that comes when we are united with one another, free from discord, doubt and misunderstanding.  God’s peace empowers us to walk through the challenges of life with a quiet conviction that we will face whatever comes before us with the guidance of Christ.

Two key thoughts thus emerge:

  1. Where do I need to foster peace in my life?
  2. How can I share God’s peace with others?

Are there parts of my life that hunger for peace?  Bring them to prayer.  Are there ways that I can be an instrument of peace, in my own life and in the lives of others?  Act now.  God’s peace is for the asking and the Holy Spirit is present to renew us with this blessed gift.

May we leave behind our fears and anxieties, turning to Christ for the strength and guidance we need to embrace our lives with joy.

Peace be with you!

Easter Day Readings

Fr. Andrew’s Homily Podcast (7 minutes, given at Cathedral on April 4, 2015)

I can only imagine the surge of excitement that went through the disciples as the word was shared.  Beyond the agony of the Cross and the sorrow of the Tomb on that first day of the week the message was proclaimed:  He’s Alive!

And everything changes.  This group of disciples – bound by fear and selfishness – are transformed with a new strength and conviction.  Their encounter with the Risen Lord will empower them to face the obstacles of this world with joy and hope.  They have seen the risen Christ…what is there to fear?  They have embraced the one who has conquered sin and death – there is NOTHING that can shake their confidence in the light of Easter morning.

This same strength comes to us.  Like the first disciples, we can turn to Jesus and allow his saving grace to renew us with a strength far beyond our own.  We can claim a hope that sustains us in the midst of our challenges and struggles.  The Easter sunrise brings light to the darkest corners of our hearts.

What in our lives needs to be touched by Jesus Christ?  We are invited to boldly come forward, receive his resurrection strength, and face whatever this world presents with confidence: the victory of Christ enlivens us to travel through life with the conviction that the grace he gave his disciples continues in our hearts today.

May this Easter season be a time of transformation and renewal; a time where we embrace the gift of our lives with a new freedom and conviction.  In the light of this Easter, may we follow the one who leads us from sin and death to the abundance of life…in this world, and the world to come.

Happy Easter!
