Let’s explore some of the themes that are present in the Mass readings for the 2nd Sunday of the Year.
1st Reading – 1st Samuel 3:3b-10,19
The Lord repeatedly calls Samuel in the night by name.
Eli, a priest of the Lord, teaches Samuel that when he hears the Lord call, he is to say, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”
Psalm 40:2,4,7-10
“Here am I, Lord, I come to do your will.”
While praising God’s justice, we wait for the Lord and obey his commandments.
2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 6:13c-15a,17-20
The body is made for the Lord, and so we avoid immorality.
Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit; therefore, we glorify God in our bodies.
Gospel – John 1:35-42
John the Baptist sees Jesus walking by and he tells two of his disciples, “Behold, the Lamb of God.”
These disciples follow Jesus, who invites them to “come, and see” where he is staying.
One of these disciples, Andrew, brings his brother Simon to Jesus, who gives him a new name: Peter.
