Study, Pray, Serve: The Most Holy Trinity

Let’s explore some of the themes that surface in the readings for the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity.

1st Reading – Proverbs 8:22-31

From the beginning, God’s wisdom was present and prior to all creation.
God delights in creation, including the human race.

Psalm – 8:4-9

“O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!”
God’s awesome creation calls forth wonder and awe from his creatures.

2nd Reading – Romans 5:1-5

We have peace with God through Jesus Christ, in whom we place our hope.
We face our trials with the grace and help of the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

Gospel – John 16:12-15

Jesus promises his disciples that they will be given the Spirit of truth as their guide.
The Spirit will affirm all that Jesus has said and taught.

Pentecost: Come Holy Spirit! Catholic Inspiration

The Holy Spirit ignites the hearts of the disciples and empowers them to go out into the world. May their example inspire us to call upon the Spirit each and every day!

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you will renew the face of the earth. O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Study, Pray, Serve: Pentecost

There are LOTS of options for the Mass Readings for Pentecost, including the Vigil Mass and the Mass During the Day. Here is a short summary:

VIGIL MASS

1st Reading Options

Genesis 11:1-9 – The Tower of Babel
Exodus 19:3-8,16-20b – Moses encounters God on Mount Sinai
Ezekiel 37:1-14 – Ezekiel prophesizes over the dry bones
Joel 3:1-5 – God will pour out the Spirit upon all creation

Psalm Options

Psalm 33 – “Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.”
Daniel 3:52-56 – “Glory and praise forever!”
Psalm 19 – “Lord you have the words of everlasting life.”
Psalm 107 – “Give thanks to the Lord; his love is everlasting.”
Psalm 104 – “Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.”

2nd Reading – Romans 8:22-27 – The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness

Gospel – John 7:37-39 – Jesus refers to the Spirit

MASS DURING THE DAY

1st Reading – Acts 2:1-11 – The Spirit comes upon the Apostles

Psalm 104 – Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.”

2nd Reading Options

1st Corinthians 12:3b-7,12-13 – There are different gifts, but the same Spirit
Romans 8:8-17 – The Spirit of God dwells in you

Gospel Options

John 20:19-23 – The disciples receive the Holy Spirit from Jesus
John 14:15-16,23b-26 – The Father will send the Holy Spirit
