Let’s explore some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 23rd Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Isaiah 35:4-7a

  • Say to those whose hearts are frightened: be strong, fear not!
  • God comes to the people bringing healing and life to the world.

Psalm – 146:7-10

  • “Praise the Lord, my soul!”
  • We glorify God who brings hope and healing to those in need, and thwarts the way of the wicked.

2nd Reading – James 2:1-5

  • We are charged to show no partiality to others based on wealth or appearance.
  • God chooses the poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom.

Gospel – Mark 7:31-37

  • A deaf man with a speech impediment is brought before Jesus.
  • After the Lord heals the man, the crowds give praise to God.

Study, Pray, Serve: 13th Sunday of the Year

Let’s examine some of the themes that surface in the Mass readings for the 13th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24

  • God did not make death, nor does the Lord rejoice in the destruction of the living.
  • God formed humanity to be imperishable, but by the envy of the devil death entered the world.

Psalm – 30:2,4-6,22-24

  • “I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.”
  • We give thanks to God who has had pity on us and preserved us from death.

2nd Reading – 2nd Corinthians 8:7,9,13-15

  • For our sake Jesus became poor, so that by his poverty we might become rich.
  • Mindful of what the Lord has done for us, we supply the needs of those who are burdened.

Gospel – Mark 5:21-43

  • While Jesus is on the way to heal a child, a woman touches his cloak and is healed.
  • Upon arriving at the child’s home and told that she has died, Jesus approaches, takes the child by the hand, and with a word restores her to life.
