Mass Readings – Wednesday of the 18th Week of the Year

The Canaanite woman in the Gospel is not Jewish, does not know the Law, the Prophets, or the great story of salvation history.  What she knows is that Jesus can heal, and on that simple premise she reveals a faith that will not be denied…giving us an example to follow.

Jesus heals the paralytic AND forgives his sins.  In other words, an encounter with the Lord is a healing encounter.  May we both draw near to Christ and bring others in need – for the healing of body and soul.

14th Sunday of the Year – Sent by the Lord

Study: Consider an experience where you were sent out to do a task.  What was difficult?  Where did you find strength to carry it out?

Pray:  Is there something you are feeling called to do, but find it challenging?  Ask the Lord for the grace to make it happen!

Serve:  How can you help those who are doing the Lord’s work right now?  How can you support missionaries, service groups, and those who care for the sick?

Mass Readings – 14th Sunday of the Year

The Gospel of Luke recounts how Jesus sent out 72 disciples.  Note these features:

  • There is great need (The harvest is rich, the laborers are few…”)
  • They go out in pairs – to support each other
  • They come with peaceful hearts
  • They travel simply, trusting in the providence of God
  • They cure the sick
  • They proclaim the Kingdom of God

And they are successful!  They return to Jesus, rejoicing that even demons are cast out by the power of the Lord’s name.

What a powerful reminder that we, too, are sent by the Lord.  God calls us, empowers us, and directs our lives to bring faith, hope and love to those who cross our path.  Let’s apply the Gospel reading then accordingly:

  1. There is great need – among the people we know and love
  2. We can work together: family, friends, as a parish or community
  3. The Peace of Jesus Christ guides our words and actions
  4. We focus more on people, less on material things
  5. We seek to promote healing at all times
  6. We proclaim the Good News of Christ

Christ sent out his disciples with great success, and he continues to call forth disciples today to continue his saving work.  May we respond with open hearts as we make a difference among the people God places before us.

Mass Readings – 11th Sunday of the Year

Forgiveness is often difficult, yet it is one of the defining features of the Christian Life.  We start by forgiving those closest to us, seeking to say “I’m sorry” and “I forgive you,” and then calling upon the Lord for the help and strength we need.

10th Sunday of the Year Readings

Just as Jesus restored to life the Widow’s Son in the Gospel of Luke, God can also touch our lives with power and grace.  Two thoughts emerge:

  1. What is dying and wounded in my life that requires the Lord’s healing touch?
  2. What is one thing I can do today to share my life with others?

Three Great Things

6th Sunday of Easter – Peace I give to you

mypeace

Study: Recall a time when you experienced a profound sense of peace.  What made this possible?

Pray: Ask for God’s peace to touch your life and the those you love.

Serve: Consider ways you can share the peace of Christ with others.  Be an instrument of peace today.

6th Sunday of Easter Readings

I find the words of the Lord in the Gospel tremendously comforting:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.
Not as the world gives do I give it to you.
Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.”  (John 14:27)

How often do we need to hear these words!  How often do we find ourselves disturbed and upset by the frustrations and fears of life?!  And yet, Jesus – who knows us better than we know ourselves – consoles and comforts us with a peace that flows on the wings of the Holy Spirit from the heart of Heaven.

We crave peace: in our hearts, our homes, our work, our community.  There is a tranquility that comes when we are united with one another, free from discord, doubt and misunderstanding.  God’s peace empowers us to walk through the challenges of life with a quiet conviction that we will face whatever comes before us with the guidance of Christ.

Two key thoughts thus emerge:

  1. Where do I need to foster peace in my life?
  2. How can I share God’s peace with others?

Are there parts of my life that hunger for peace?  Bring them to prayer.  Are there ways that I can be an instrument of peace, in my own life and in the lives of others?  Act now.  God’s peace is for the asking and the Holy Spirit is present to renew us with this blessed gift.

May we leave behind our fears and anxieties, turning to Christ for the strength and guidance we need to embrace our lives with joy.

Peace be with you!
