24th Sunday of the Year: Walking in faith

Study:  Recall a time when you had to carry out a difficult task.  Where did you find your strength?  How did others respond to your actions?

Pray:  Consider the challenges before you right now and ask the Lord for the wisdom and courage you need.

Serve:  Is there someone in your life who is walking a difficult path?  How can you help them?

Mass Readings – 24th Sunday of the Year

My dad often used the saying:

“He can talk the talk, but can he walk the walk?”

It was a favorite line of his when he heard a lot of words but didn’t see much action.  Fact is, most of the time our words signal our behavior; our actions prove it.

The Letter of James puts this notion of action into the context of faith: we demonstrate our faith by the works of daily life.  Talking about our love for the Lord is good, but showing it consistently is crucial.  Let’s face it – as disciples we are at our best when we are living examples of the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Of course, sometimes living our faith is difficult, challenging, and painful.  There are times when we are tested to keep going in the right direction, to stay true to our values and purpose, and to hang in there when we might be tempted to stop.  Not only are we living witnesses, but the proof of our faith is often revealed in our actions when times are toughest.

Both Isaiah and Jesus testify that some paths will demand everything we have, even our lives.  In these moments we trust completely in God for the wisdom, courage, and power we need.

As we walk the walk of faith we remember that we do not do it alone: the Lord continues to put people in our lives and strengthens us through Sacraments, Scripture, Prayer, and Fellowship.  What’s more, there are times when we are called upon to support others on their walk – giving strength to those who struggle.

Whether we are leaning on another or lending a helping hand to someone in need…may we walk the walk, with Jesus Christ by our side.

13th Sunday of the Year: Life, Death and the Gift of Faith

Study:  Consider people you know who are suffering right now.  What is the nature of their struggle?

Pray:  Keep a list of those who are sick nearby when you pray.  Remember them often.

Serve:  How can your faith help someone today who suffers?  How can you be an instrument of healing and comfort?

Mass Readings – 13th Sunday of the Year

Consider for a moment someone you love who is seriously sick.  Perhaps it’s a disease, an upcoming surgery, and undiagnosed circumstance, or the relentless experience of pain...we all know loved ones who suffer – and we would do anything to help.

Now imagine that you have heard about a miracle worker who cures the sick and resuscitates the dead.  I know that if I discovered that Jesus of Nazareth was even remotely in the area I would rent a bus and bundle in everyone I could fit just for the chance that he would lay hands on them.

This is the situation we encounter in the Gospel today.  People are crushing in on Christ; they have heard of his power and they are are desperate for healing.  The double miracles in the reading point out a number of key concepts:

  • Our longing for healing
  • The desperation of those who suffer
  • The depth and breadth of emotions around illness
  • How we all have experience with sickness and death
  • God’s profound gift of healing & life

Simply put, an encounter with Jesus Christ is a healing encounter.  In the face of sickness and disease, the Lord draws near – bringing grace and power – to restore life to those who suffer.

As his disciples, we are part of this healing mission.

  1. Who is suffering in our lives right now?
  2. How can we help through prayer or service?
  3. How do we promote comprehensive healing – in Body, Mind, Heart, and Soul?

Jesus comes to bring life; may our lives – guided in faith – be directed toward healing the wounds we witness.

Daily Mass: Stir into flame the gift of God! Catholic Inspiration

The reading from the Second Letter to Timothy offers the exhortation to “stir into flame the gift of God” and live with conviction and courage.  This gift is our Christian faith; and just as a tiny spark can produce a bonfire, so too, our faith can provide the spiritual spark that ignites our lives for service in the world as we draw near to the Lord and one another.
