Study, Pray, Serve: 20th Sunday of the Year

Here are some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 20th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Proverbs 9:1-6

  • Wisdom is described as a woman who has built her house and prepared a banquet feast.
  • All are invited to forsake foolishness and come and eat and drink at her table.

Psalm – 34:2-7

  • “Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.”
  • We give praise to God who saves us in our moments of distress.

2nd Reading – Ephesians 5:15-20

  • This passage offers an exhortation to avoid foolish people and live with wisdom.
  • We are called to live in the Spirit and give thanks for everything in the name of Jesus.

Gospel – John 6:51-58

  • The crowd is now quarreling about how Jesus can give his flesh to eat.
  • The Lord teaches that his flesh gives them life, and it is true food.
  • The life that Jesus has from the Father will also be given to those who feed on him.
