Study, Pray, Serve: 5th Sunday of the Year

Here are some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 5th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Isaiah 6:1-2a,3-8

  • The prophet has a vision of the seraphim glorifying God saying, “Holy, holy, holy!”
  • The prophet then declares “Here I am!” when the Lord calls for someone to send.

Psalm – 138:1-5,7-8

  • “In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord.”
  • We call upon the Lord, who builds up strength within us.

2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 15:1-11

  • Paul recaps key elements about Jesus, inviting the people to hold fast to this knowledge.
  • Through the grace of God, Paul has been sustained to carry out his work.

Gospel – Luke 5:1-11

  • Jesus directs Peter to put out into deep water, and the nets bring in an immense catch of fish.
  • Afterwards, Jesus tells Peter, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”

Study, Pray, Serve: The Presentation of the Lord

Let’s review the themes in the Mass readings for the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord.

1st Reading – Malachi 3:1-4

  • The Lord is sending his messenger to prepare the way.
  • He will purify and refine the sons of Levi, and they will offer sacrifice to the Lord.

Psalm – 24:7-10

  • “Who is this king of glory? It is the Lord!”
  • We welcome the Lord, strong and mighty, to enter the hearts of all who seek him.

2nd Reading – Hebrews 2:14-18

  • Jesus became like us in every way but sin, to free us from the fear of death and the devil.
  • Christ was tested by what he suffered, and so he is able to help those who are being tested.

Gospel – Luke 2:22-40

  • Mary and Joseph take Jesus to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.
  • In the temple area they meet Simeon and Anna, who give praise to God and bless the child.
