Let’s explore some of the themes for this 5th Sunday of Lent.

1st Reading – Isaiah 43:16-21

  • The prophet invites the people to reflect on God’s mighty deeds in the past.
  • The Lord is now doing something new that will renew all creation.

Psalm – 126:1-6

  • “The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.”
  • Out of moments of suffering and trial, we recall God’s grace and help.

2nd Reading – Philippians 3:8-14

  • St. Paul contrasts how little he disregards the suffering in this life for the glory we possess in Jesus Christ.
  • With his hope anchored in the Lord, he eagerly looks ahead to the future.

Gospel – John 8:1-11

  • A woman caught in adultery is brought before Jesus by an angry crowd.
  • After Jesus gently admonishes the crowd to consider their own sins, he then shows mercy to the woman.

Daily Mass: Will we listen to the Lord? Catholic Inspiration

At the Jordan River during my Holy Land pilgrimage in 2019

The Lord cites the first reading about Elisha at the Jordan river to the people of Nazareth, who are furious with Jesus after he shows how prophets are often rejected in their native place. May we learn from this response and seek instead to embrace the Lord’s teaching in our lives.
