Study, Pray, Serve: The Solemnity of St. Peter and St. Paul.

Let’s examine some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul.

1st Reading – Acts of the Apostles 12:1-11

  • During a time of great unrest James is killed and Peter is taken to prison.
  • The night before his trial, and angel comes to Peter and frees him.

Psalm – 34:2-9

  • “The angel of the Lord will rescue those who fear him.”
  • We praise God who delivers us in our need.

2nd Reading – 2nd Timothy 4:6-8,17-18

  • Paul writes how he has finished the race and kept the faith.
  • He speaks about how God gave him strength and has rescued him from every evil threat.

Gospel – Matthew 16:13-19

  • Peter answers the Lord’s question, and Jesus gives him a new name that reveals he is the rock upon which Christ will build his church.
  • This church will have the power to bind and loose, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.

Study, Pray, Serve: The Body and Blood of Christ

Let’s examine some of the themes that we find in the Mass Readings for the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ.

1st Reading – Genesis 14:18-20

  • Melchizedek, a king and a priest, brings out bread and wine, offering a blessing to Abram.
  • Abram gives a tenth of his possessions to Melchizedek in return.

Psalm – 110:1-4

  • “You are a priest for ever, in the line of Melchizedek.”
  • God rules with power over the people and grants them his blessing.

2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 11:23-26

  • Paul reminds the people that Jesus defined and commanded the reception of the Eucharist.
  • Paul then teaches that as often as they eat the bread and drink the cup, they proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes.

Gospel – Luke 9:11b-17

  • Jesus takes five loaves and two fish, blesses and gives them to a crowd of 5000 people.
  • The people eat their fill, and there are twelve wicker baskets of leftover fragments.
