Study, Pray, Serve: 2nd Sunday of Advent

Let’s examine some of the themes that appear in the Mass readings for the 2nd Sunday of Advent.

1st Reading – Isaiah 40:1-5,9-11

  • A voice cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the Lord!
  • Fear not, but speak comfort: Here is your God who comes with power!

Psalm – 85:9-14

  • “Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.”
  • From the Lord shall come kindness and truth, justice and peace.

2nd Reading – 2nd Peter 3:8-14

  • With the Lord, one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.
  • The day of the Lord will come suddenly; thus we conduct ourselves in holiness and devotion, eager to be found without spot or blemish.

Gospel – Mark 1:1-8

  • John the Baptist proclaims a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
  • John proclaims, “One mightier than I is coming…he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Here are some of the main themes in our Mass Readings for the 1st Sunday of Advent.

1st Reading – Isaiah 63:16b-17,19b; 64:2-7

  • Recognizing their sinful ways, the people acknowledge their guilt.
  • As they ask the Lord pardon from their sins, they recognize God’s might; the Lord is the potter, and we are the clay.

Psalm – 80:2-3,15-16,18-19

  • “Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.”
  • We recognize our need for God’s power to save us and give us life.

2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 1:3-9

  • Paul gives thanks to God for the grace that the people have received in Christ Jesus.
  • God’s faithfulness will help the people remain in fellowship with the Lord and firm to the end.

Gospel – Mark 13:33-37

  • Jesus exhorts the disciples to be watchful and alert.
  • The Lord stresses the point that they do not know when the time will come, but when it does, it will be swift and unexpected.
