Let’s explore some of the themes that appear in the Mass readings for the 17th Week of the Year.
1st Reading – 2nd Kings 4:42-44
Elisha commands that 20 barley loaves be given to feed 100 people.
The people eat their fill and there is some left over.
Psalm – 145:10-11,15-18
“The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.”
We give thanks to God, who is just and generous.
2nd Reading – Ephesians 4:1-6
Paul urges the people to live in a manner worthy of their call, with humility, gentleness, patience, love, unity, and peace.
He reminds them that they possess one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all.
Gospel – John 6:1-15
Jesus performs a miracle, feeding over five thousand men with only five barley loaves and two fish.
The crowd is satisfied, and there are twelve wicker baskets of fragments left over.
