Study, Pray, Serve: The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

Let’s examine some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the King of the Universe.

1st Reading – Daniel 7:13-14

  • Daniel has a vision where he sees the Son of man presented before the Ancient One.
  • The Son of man receives dominion, glory, and kingship that is everlasting.

Psalm – 93:1-2,5

  • “The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty.”
  • The Lord’s kingship and throne are everlasting; he is robed in splendor and holiness.

2nd Reading – Revelation 1:5-8

  • Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, is the firstborn of the dead and ruler of the kings of the earth.
  • He is the Alpha and Omega, who comes in glory and power.

Gospel – John 18:33b-37

  • When asked if he is a king by Pilate, Jesus says that his kingdom does not belong to this world.
  • The Lord says that he has come to testify to the truth for those who will listen to his voice.
