Let’s examine some of the themes in the Mass readings for the 4th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Deuteronomy 18:15-20

  • God will raise up a prophet after Moses for the people; if anyone does not not listen to him, the Lord will make him answer for it.
  • If someone presumes to speak as a prophet in God’s name with a message not from God, he will die.

Psalm – 95:1-2,6-9

  • “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.”
  • We joyfully draw near to the Lord in worship with thanksgiving.

2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 7:32-35

  • Paul encourages the people to be free from anxieties and things of the world.
  • Paul’s intention is to encourage our lives to serve the Lord without distraction.

Gospel – Mark 1:21-28

  • While teaching at the synagogue at Capernaum, Jesus rebukes an unclean spirit and orders it come out of the afflicted man.
  • Those present are amazed at the authority of the Lord, where even evil spirits obey Jesus.
