
Let’s examine some of the themes in the Mass readings for the 4th Sunday of the Year.
1st Reading – Deuteronomy 18:15-20
- God will raise up a prophet after Moses for the people; if anyone does not not listen to him, the Lord will make him answer for it.
- If someone presumes to speak as a prophet in God’s name with a message not from God, he will die.
Psalm – 95:1-2,6-9
- “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.”
- We joyfully draw near to the Lord in worship with thanksgiving.
2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 7:32-35
- Paul encourages the people to be free from anxieties and things of the world.
- Paul’s intention is to encourage our lives to serve the Lord without distraction.
Gospel – Mark 1:21-28
- While teaching at the synagogue at Capernaum, Jesus rebukes an unclean spirit and orders it come out of the afflicted man.
- Those present are amazed at the authority of the Lord, where even evil spirits obey Jesus.
