Let’s take a look at some of the themes in the Mass Readings for the 26th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Ezekiel 18:25-28

  • When a person turns away from virtue to commit iniquity, it leads to death.
  • When a person turns away from wickedness and does what is right and just, it leads to life.

Psalm – 25:4-9

  • “Remember your mercies, O Lord.”
  • God makes known to us the path of life, showing sinners the way and leading the humble to justice.

2nd Reading – Philippians 2:1-11

  • We are urged to have the same attitude as Christ, who emptied himself and offered his life.
  • Because of his sacrifice, every knee shall bow in heaven, on earth, and under the earth that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Gospel – Matthew 21:28-32

  • Jesus offers a parable about a man who has two sons who say and do different things when asked.
  • The Lord then points out that it is our actions (especially repentance) that reveal our relationship to God and one another.
