Study, Pray, Serve: 13th Sunday of the Year

Here are some of the main themes in the readings for the 13th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – 1st Kings 19:16b,19-21

  • God tells Elijah to anoint Elisha as a prophet to succeed him.
  • Elijah throws his cloak over Elisha as he is plowing with 12 oxen.

Psalm – 16:1-2,5,7-11

  • “You are my inheritance, O Lord.”
  • We rejoice and take refuge in God who counsels and protects us.

2nd Reading – Galatians 5:1,13-18

  • We are called to freedom through the saving action of Christ.
  • We live in the Spirit, who calls us to avoid the desire of the flesh and love one another.

Gospel – Luke 9:51-62

  • Jesus is rejected by a Samaritan village on his journey to Jerusalem.
  • The Lord responds to some of the people who claim to want to follow him.
