Here are some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 27th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Isaiah 5:1-7

  • The prophet uses the example of a vineyard for the house of Israel, citing the planning, work, and preparation that are necessary to make it happen.
  • When the vineyard does not produce fruitful grapes, it becomes a ruin that is overgrown with thorns and briars.

Psalm – 80:9,12-16,19-20

  • “The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel.”
  • The Psalmist calls upon God for help to save and strengthen the “vine” of Israel.

2nd Reading – Philippians 4:6-9

  • Have no anxiety, but rather make all prayers and petitions to God with thanksgiving.
  • Keep doing all things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, gracious, excellent, and praiseworthy!

Gospel – Matthew 21:33-43

  • Jesus offers a parable of a vineyard where the tenants reject the servants and even the landowner’s son.
  • The Lord then applies this parable to the chief priests and the elders, showing how they have rejected the kingdom of God.
