33rd Sunday of the Year: Facing the tough times.

Study: Consider a time when you felt paralyzed by fear.  What helped you to act in a healthy way?

Pray: Do you have a situation where you are struggling for the right words to day?  Ask the Lord for the wisdom to speak.

Serve:  Is someone struggling in your life right now?  How can you help them persevere?

Mass Readings – 33rd Sunday of the Year

In the Gospel Jesus responds to the questions of those who are wondering when the destruction of the Temple will happen.  Through the course of his dialogue three key points surface:

  1. Do not fear.
  2. Trust in the Lord for the wisdom to speak.
  3. Persevere!

These points are crucial – they touch so much of our daily lives!  How often have we experienced moments of fear, or searched for just the right words to say, or looked for strength when we felt weak?  This advice is solid, practical, and helpful.

And yet while we may very well find ourselves nodding in agreement, we also know that this is often hard to do.  Fear can suffocate us and manipulate how we speak and act; sometimes we speak and live to regret what we said or how we said it; and there are days when we wonder why are we doing what we do.

The Lord understands.  Christ faced his fears in the Garden of Gethsemane; he spoke to the hearts of those who persecuted him, even as he persevered on the way to Calvary.

Today we examine our lives for vulnerable spots where we are weak and prone to temptation.  It is here that we call upon the Lord – to face our fears, trust in God’s wisdom, and keep going with a strength that is greater than our own.

Mass Readings – 33rd Sunday of the Year

The Gospel today reminds us that when tough times happen in our lives we:

  1. Do not fear
  2. Trust in God’s wisdom
  3. Persevere

While it is not always easy to do, we know that the Lord will help us face our difficult moments with a power that is greater than our own.

29th Sunday of the Year – Hang in there!

perseverance-6-638

Study:  Reflect on the last time you encountered a difficult situation.  Where did you find the strength to continue?

Pray:  Are you or someone close to you going through tough times right now?  Ask God for renewed strength!

Serve:  Are there people you know who are struggling right now?  What can you do to support them?

Mass Readings – 29th Sunday of the Year

We often tell loved ones to “hang in there” when the going gets tough.  God provides us with strength for the journey, and we see examples of this in the readings this week:

  • 1st Reading – Aaron and Hur support Moses as he prays during a battle.
  • Psalm – “Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”
  • 2nd Reading – Timothy is encouraged to “remain faithful to what you have learned and believed.”
  • Gospel – Jesus offers the parable of the persistent widow who confronts the dishonest judge.

Let’s face it: sometimes life is hard!  In these moments we discover strength within us that we never knew before, but we also come to recognize how we need help from the Lord and those around us.

And while no one likes difficulty, it is often through our persistence in the face of obstacles that we grow and mature.  Challenges can become opportunities in which we exercise our will to continue.  Like athletes who train with weights, the resistance we face helps us become strong.

As you ponder these readings and consider the challenges of life, give some thought to these points:

  1. Is there something hard in my life that I need to face?
  2. Are there people in my life who will support me in the midst of challenges?
  3. Are the people I am called to support in their challenges?
  4. Do I pray every day for myself and others to face difficulties with God’s grace?

In the midst of tough times God is present with grace, wisdom and strength.  May we call upon the Lord as we face our challenges today with persistence.
