On this feast of the Chair of St. Peter, we hear how Peter acknowledges that Jesus is the Christ. The Lord affirms that Peter is the rock upon which the Church will be built, and while Satan will try to destroy it, the gates of the netherworld will not prevail.
Both Isaiah and St. Peter initially express doubt and fear in the presence of God’s invitation. Yet like them we are called to move beyond our self-imposed obstacles and accept the Lord’s prompting in our lives…even when it’s hard.
Jesus responds to Peter’s question about forgiveness with a parable that reveals the power of forgiveness as an intense way of life. It’s not easy, but it is the path that we walk to receive God’s merciful grace into our hearts.
These two heavy hitter saints were far from perfect, and yet God worked in and through them to accomplish marvelous deeds. Their example serves as our inspiration: God patiently works with us! As we look to Sts. Peter & Paul may we embrace the gifts of life and faith as we follow Jesus Christ.
When Jesus asks his disciples “Who do you say that I am?” Peter gets it right. Jesus is the Christ, the Lord, the one who saves us from our sins and empowers us as Sons and Daughters of God. Our acceptance of this reality transforms our lives with his light and power!
When Jesus steps into the boat he changes Peter’s life forever. As the Lord teaches the crowds and invites Peter to abandon fear and follow him, we find that Christ continues to do the same in our lives, reaching out to us and welcoming us into a life of faith.
Entrusting the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven to Peter, Jesus establishes the Church upon a rock that hell itself cannot prevail against. Christ is the key; through prayer, sacraments and virtue we grow in grace through this life so that we can enter into the Lord’s Kingdom in the next.
Fear is a part of life, yet our response determines the impact it will have upon us. Peter’s experience of fear reminds us that we have an opportunity today to call upon the Lord for the courage we need to face our fears with the power of faith.
Caught in the storm Jesus exhorts his disciples to take courage and discard fear. What a great reminder for us today! When fear threatens to choke our lives may we turn to the one who offers us strength and wisdom to carry on.
