Let’s take a look at some of the themes that appear in the Mass readings for the 3rd Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Jonah 3:1-5,10

  • Jonah fulfills God’s command and travels to Nineveh with a message of destruction and doom.
  • The people take the message to heart, and they repent by fasting and wearing sackcloth.

Psalm – 25:4-9

  • “Teach me your ways, O Lord.”
  • We ask the Lord to guide us in truth, as we remember God’s kindness and compassion.

2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 7:29-31

  • Paul exhorts the people that the present world is passing away.
  • He encourages them to detach from earthly concerns and relationships.

Gospel – Mark 1:14-20

  • After the arrest of John the Baptist, Jesus continues to preach about repentance, saying that the Kingdom of God is at hand.
  • Jesus then calls Peter, Andrew, James and John by name; they immediately follow the Lord.
