Study, Pray, Serve: 31st Sunday of the Year

Photo by Pok Rie on Pexels.com

Here are some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 31st Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Malachi 1:14b-2:2b,8-10

  • The Lord chastises and curses the priests who failed to give glory to God.
  • They have become contemptible for not keeping the Lord’s ways.

Psalm – 131:1-3

  • “In you, Lord, I have found my peace.”
  • Neither haughty nor proud, not busy with great things, the quiet and still soul hopes in the Lord.

2nd Reading – Thessalonians 2:7b-9,13

  • Gentle and with great affection, Paul worked night and day to proclaim the Gospel to the people.
  • He is thankful that they have received the word of God, which is now at work in them.

Gospel – Matthew 23:1-12

  • Jesus tells the people to observe what the scribes and Pharisees say, but not to follow their example.
  • He then teaches that the greatest among them must be their servant.
  • “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”
