Here are some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 26th Sunday of the Year.
1st Reading – Amos 6:1a,4-7
- Amos calls out the wealthy and complacent, who have overlooked the collapse of the people.
- Their wanton revelry will be done away with, and they will be the first to go into exile.
Psalm – 146:7-10
- “Praise the Lord, my soul”
- God protects and sustains all those in need.
2nd Reading – 1st Timothy 6:11-16
- Timothy is urged to live virtuously as he holds firm in his faith.
- Jesus Christ, King of kings and Lord of lords, has all honor and eternal power.
Gospel – Luke 16:19-31
- Jesus offers the parable of Lazarus and the rich man, revealing the reversal of fortune in the afterlife.
- In the parable Christ notes that if people do not listen to “Moses and the prophets” they will not believe, even if someone should rise from the dead.
