Study, Pray, Serve: 1st Sunday of Lent

Here are some of the themes that we find in the readings for the 1st Sunday of Lent.

1st Reading – Genesis 9:8-15

  • God makes a covenant with Noah, that never again will creation be destroyed by a flood.
  • God’s sign of this covenant is the rainbow in the sky.

Psalm – 25:4-9

  • “Your ways, O Lord, are love and truth to those who keep your covenant.”
  • God guides us and makes known the ways and paths that teach us justice and truth.

2nd Reading – 1st Peter 3:18-22

  • Put to death in the flesh, Christ suffered for sins once, and was brought to life in the Spirit.
  • The Lord preached to the souls in prison, saving us through his resurrection to cleanse us of our sins.

Gospel – Mark 1:12-15

  • The Spirit drove Jesus into the desert where he remained for forty days and was tempted by Satan.
  • Following John’s arrest, Jesus comes to Galilee and proclaims: “The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the gospel.”
