Here are some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica.

1st Reading – Ezekiel 47:1-2,8-9,12

  • The angel brings the prophet to the entrance of the temple, and the water that was flowing out becomes a great river.
  • Wherever the river flows every living plant and animal flourishes and teems with life.

Psalm – 46:2-3,5-6,8-9

  • “The waters of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High.”
  • God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in times of distress.

2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 3:9c-11,16-17

  • We are God’s building with Christ as the foundation.
  • We are temples of God, and the Spirit of God dwells in us.

Gospel – John 2:13-22

  • Seeing all the sellers and money changers in the temple area, Jesus makes a whip of cords and drives them all out.
  • Speaking of his own body, Jesus says “destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.”
