Let’s examine some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 8th Week of the Year.
1st Reading – Sirach 27:4-7
Our speech reveals our inner thoughts and the direction of our actions.
When we are tested, our speech uncovers our faults and personal care.
Psalm – 92:2-3,13-16
“Lord, it is good to give thanks to you.”
When we stay close to the Lord we flourish and bear fruit.
2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 15:54-58
The sting of death is sin, and we give thanks to God for the victory through Jesus Christ.
We remain steadfast and devoted to our work for the Lord.
Gospel – Luke 6:39-45
Before we point out the faults of others, we first acknowledge our own.
Good or bad, a tree is known by its fruit; in the same way, we are known by the fruitfulness of our lives.

Let’s take a look at the themes in the Mass readings for the 7th Sunday of the Year.
1st Reading – 1st Samuel 26:2,7-9,12-13,22-23
David and Abishai come upon Saul at night as he is sleeping in the midst of his soldiers.
David spares Saul’s life and declares that he would not harm the Lord’s anointed.
Psalm – 103: 1-4,8,10,12-13
“The Lord is kind and merciful.”
The Lord has compassion for us, pardoning our iniquities and redeeming our lives.
2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 15:45-49
The first man, Adam, is earthly; the second man, Jesus, is heavenly.
Just as we have borne the image of the earthly one, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one.
Gospel – Luke 6:27-38
The Lord teaches his disciples to love their enemies and do good to those who hate them.
Jesus adds that his disciples be merciful, stop judging and condemning, and forgive one another.
