Study, Pray, Serve: The Solemnity of St. Peter and St. Paul.

Let’s examine some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul.

1st Reading – Acts of the Apostles 12:1-11

  • During a time of great unrest James is killed and Peter is taken to prison.
  • The night before his trial, and angel comes to Peter and frees him.

Psalm – 34:2-9

  • “The angel of the Lord will rescue those who fear him.”
  • We praise God who delivers us in our need.

2nd Reading – 2nd Timothy 4:6-8,17-18

  • Paul writes how he has finished the race and kept the faith.
  • He speaks about how God gave him strength and has rescued him from every evil threat.

Gospel – Matthew 16:13-19

  • Peter answers the Lord’s question, and Jesus gives him a new name that reveals he is the rock upon which Christ will build his church.
  • This church will have the power to bind and loose, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
