Let’s review some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 21st Sunday of the Year.
1st Reading – Isaiah 66:18-21
God will gather nations from every language to come and see the glory of the Lord.
They will gather in Jerusalem, the holy mountain, and bring an offering to God.
Psalm 117:1-2
“Go out to all the world and tell the Good News.”
All people will praise the Lord who is steadfast in his kindness and fidelity.
2nd Reading – Hebrews 12:5-7,11-13
We endure our trials as discipline that comes from the Lord.
While discipline often includes pain, it strengthens and trains us to carry on.
Gospel – Luke 13:22-30
When asked if only a few people will be saved, Jesus urges his disciples to strive to enter through the narrow gate.
The Lord says that people will come from the four corners of the earth and recline at table in the kingdom of God.

Here are some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the 20th Sunday of the Year.
1st Reading – Jeremiah 38:4-6,8-10
Jeremiah is cast into a cistern at the threat of his enemies.
Ebed-melech, a court official, pleads for his release and releases him from the cistern.
Psalm – 40:2-4,18
“Lord, come to my aid!”
Afflicted and poor, the Lord draws us out from the pit of destruction.
2nd Reading – Hebrews 12:1-4
Surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, we persevere in running the race with our eyes fixed on Jesus.
We continue in our struggle against sin as we recall how Christ endured the Cross.
Gospel – Luke 12:49-52
The Lord comes to set a fire blazing upon the earth that will cause division, even among families.
