Study, Pray, Serve: 2nd Sunday of Easter

Here are some of the main themes that we find in the readings for the 2nd Sunday of Easter, also known as Divine Mercy Sunday.

1st Reading – Acts 2:42-47

  • The disciples are living in community, eating and praying together as they share their resources to take care of one another.
  • The apostles perform many signs and wonders, and the numbers of believers continue to grow.

Psalm – 118:2-4,13-15,22-24

  • “Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting.”
  • God gives help and strength to those in need, renewing lives that have been rejected by others.

2nd Reading – 1st Peter 1:3-9

  • Praise is given to God the Father who has saved us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
  • We acknowledge our present sufferings and place our hope in the Lord as we journey toward eternal life.

Gospel – John 20:19-31

  • The Risen Lord Jesus appears to the disciples on two occasions saying, “Peace be with you.”
  • Thomas, absent at the first appearance, comes to believe and professes his faith in Christ.

Study, Pray, Serve: The Most Holy Trinity

Let’s explore some of the themes that we discover in the Mass Readings for the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity.

1st Reading – Proverbs 8:22-31

  • The wisdom of God was present before the act of creation, possessed by the Lord from the very beginning.
  • Beside him as a craftsman, God’s wisdom found delight in the human race.

Psalm – 8:4-9

  • “O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!”
  • God has crowned humanity with glory and honor, taking its place amidst the wonders of creation.

2nd Reading – Romans 5:1-5

  • Having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Our hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

Gospel – John 16:12-15

  • Jesus promises his disciples that the Spirit of truth will guide and teach them.
  • Everything that Jesus has from the Father will be declared to his disciples.

There are MANY choices for Mass readings on the feast of Pentecost, so let’s focus on the themes we find in the Gospel options.

Vigil Mass: John 7:37-39

  • Jesus quotes the prophet Isaiah, saying that he satisfies the thirsty with living water.
  • His disciples later understand that this refers to the gift of the Holy Spirit after the Lord is glorified.

Mass during the Day: John 20:19-23

  • Jesus appears to the disciples after his resurrection saying, “Peace be with you.”
  • The Lord then breathes on them saying, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

Mass during the Day (2nd Option): John 14:15-16,23b-26

  • Jesus teaches that we keep his commandments out of our love for God.
  • We are promised the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, who will teach us everything and remind us of what the Lord taught.
