Ash Wednesday. Catholic Inspiration

Three Great Things

Ash Wednesday Readings

Fr. Andrew’s Homily Podcast

Ashes are common in our daily life – every fire leads to them.  But note these two qualities:

  • They are dirty
  • They are lifeless

Welcome to the reality of sin: The ashes we wear are an outward sign that we wish to turn away from all that soils our souls and harms our hearts.  May the words we hear today help us to seek the cleansing life that comes from Christ.  The words are clear:

Repent, and Believe in the Gospel!

1st Sunday of Lent – Be with Me Lord, When I am in Trouble

Helping Hand 2

Study: Reflect on a moment when you were in a critical need.  What pulled you through?

Pray: Ask the Lord for grace regarding a difficult situation.

Serve:  How can you be a helping hand to another?

1st Sunday of Lent Readings

Fr. Andrew’s Homily Podcast

Let’s take a look at these readings that help us kick off Lent:

  • 1st Reading – a recap of how God saved the Israelites in Egypt
  • Psalm – “Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble.”
  • 2nd Reading – “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
  • Gospel – Jesus overcomes the Devil’s 3 temptations

Have you ever been in trouble?  Serious trouble?  End of your rope?  Lost?  Confused?  Abandoned?  Scared?  Feeling like you cannot breathe because the air has gone out of your chest?  Feeling utterly alone?

You’re in good company.  People of faith for over 3000 years have called upon the Lord in their darkest moments – seeking guidance and strength.

And God provides.  We don’t have to look very hard to find examples of pain and suffering, hardship and loss, struggle, catastrophe and sin.  We also know that there are no promises that life will be easy and free from pain.  What we know is simple:  God walks with us and sustains us in our moments of need.

Of course this is only a half truth – God walks with us always!  God never leaves us, but for some very human reason we seem to call out loud and strong when we recognize our need for the Lord.  Isn’t it odd that we “get it” when we are in need…that many of us who dedicate our lives to Christ see much more clearly when the truth is self-evident?

Perhaps not.  Perhaps what this first week of Lent shows us is that our need for God (always present in our lives) is most easily observed when we cannot hide from our need.  For when we are in trouble, we are confronted with the clear and obvious reality that it is only with the Lord’s grace that we can be guided and sustained.  In the times of our testing we discover both our limitations and the Lord’s love.

What are you facing in your life right now?  What requires your own personal admission and acceptance of Christ’s mercy?  Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble!

5th Sunday of the Year – Here I am Lord, Send Me

here-am-I-open-arms-christian-wallpaper_1920x1200

Study:  Recall a moment where you felt that God was prompting you to action.  What motivated you to act?  What held you back?

Pray:  What grace do you need to carry out your current tasks?  Storm heaven for the strength you require.

Serve:  How can you make an ordinary action extraordinary?  How can you do a little thing with great love?

5th Sunday of the Year Readings

Fr. Andrew’s Homily Podcast

The readings incorporate the theme of being sent on mission:

  • 1st Reading – Isaiah responding to the Lord’s invitation
  • Psalm – Responding to the Lord’s call with songs of praise
  • 2nd Reading – Paul’s recap of the response of the apostles
  • Gospel – Jesus making “fishers of men” of the Peter & the apostles

In all these cases some common points surface:

  1. God takes the initiative and calls us
  2. We (however unworthy) are invited to respond
  3. God provides the grace and strength
  4. We are called to offer our lives in action

These are beautiful thoughts as we sit on the doorstep of Lent!  Friends, God continues to call us – providing grace – that we might respond and offer our lives for service in the world.  So let’s turn these points around from our perspective:

  1. How has the Lord called each one of us…today?
  2. What excuses or obstacles are keeping us from responding?
  3. What particular grace do we need from the Lord – ask for it!
  4. Remember: all action – great or small – that we offer will be blessed by God to make a difference in the world.

May our words follow the example of Isaiah in the first reading today:  Here am I, Lord…send me!

2nd Sunday of the Year – God’s Abundant Goodness

Wedding at Cana - Paolo_Veronese_008

Study:  Reflect on a time when you experienced something profoundly good.  How did it shape you?

Pray:  Are there needs in your life or in someone you know?  Ask the Lord to touch and bless them with goodness.

Serve:  How can you bring abundant goodness to another today?  How can your service make a real difference in someone’s life?

2nd Sunday of the Year Readings

Fr. Andrew’s Homily Podcast

This week’s readings proclaim God’s goodness in a variety of ways:

  • 1st Reading – God calls Israel his “Delight”
  • Psalm – the people proclaim the “marvelous deeds of the Lord”
  • 2nd Reading – the Spirit showers us with rich and varied gifts
  • Gospel – Jesus turns water into wine at a wedding in Cana

We often talk about the Lord’s commandments as things we should NOT do.  While this is often true and helpful, we can sometimes miss the point about all the ways our lives can DO things that are inspired (and indeed, commanded) by God.  We are called:

  • to live joyfully
  • to proclaim God’s Good News
  • to engage the gifts we have been given for others
  • to change and transform the world around us with God’s grace and blessing

Simply put, God’s goodness to us inspires us to share this abundant goodness with each other.  We are invited to take hold of our lives and make the most of each day – loving and serving, forgiving and helping, blessing, healing, rejoicing, and renewing.  We have been given the gifts of life and faith….let’s live them with power!

The gut check in all this flows from our fundamental attitude:  do we live our faith with love, joy, and peace?  Do people see goodness in the words we say and the actions we perform?  Is our Christian witness evident in the manner and conduct of our interactions with others?  May God’s goodness empower our lives to burn like a blazing torch – leading others closer to God and one another.

Christ Renews our Lives. Catholic Inspiration

Three Great Things

Fr. Andrew’s Presentation (31 minutes)

This talk was given to Confirmation students from the Cathedral and St. Francis Xavier parishes on November 11, 2015.

Note these four points:

  • God made us to be united with Him
  • Sin destroys our relationships with God and one another
  • Christ restores the relationship through his life, death, and resurrection
  • Each of us can choose to accept the gift of Christ and live as his disciple

This message is not just for kids preparing to be confirmed!  May all of us see the beauty of life, confront our struggles, and embrace the gift of Christ’s saving grace.
