Let’s take a look at the themes in the readings for the 8th Sunday of the Year.

1st Reading – Sirach 27:4-7

  • The quality of something (be it grain, pottery or fruit) is revealed when it is tested.
  • When people speak, their speech offers a fitting test of what they think and believe.

Psalm 92:2-3,13-16

  • “Lord, it is good to give thanks to you.”
  • Those who are close to the Lord flourish and are fruitful.

2nd Reading – 1st Corinthians 15:54-58

  • The sting of death is sin, which has been conquered through the victory of Jesus Christ.
  • We remain steadfast and devoted to the Lord, knowing that our hard word is not in vain.

Gospel – Luke 6:39-45

  • Through humble adherence to Christ we “remove the splinter from our eye” as we acknowledge our sins and seek to help others.
  • We can discern the content of a person’s heart by the fruit of their words and actions.

Mass Readings – Saturday of the 23rd Week of the Year

The Lord’s practical wisdom “to know a tree by it’s fruit” is immensely useful for our daily interactions with others.  We don’t judge people, but we are called to acknowledge good and bad thoughts, words, and actions – recognizing that the “fruit” of our lives can be either wholesome or destructive.
